Visiting MPs from the European Union were given a briefing on the latest findings from natural hazards science recently when they were hosted by the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC.
The group from the Delegation for Relations with Australia and New Zealand met with CEO Dr Richard Thornton, who gave an overview for Australia’s exceptional fire season and discussed the latest findings on fire spread modelling, warnings, economics, recovery and understanding risk.
The group, which included European Ambassador to Australia Michael Pulch and Assistant Director at the International and Parliamentary Relations Office Erin Lloyd,also discussed CRC research partnerships in Europe and how they can be built on.
MPs included Ulrike Müller, DANZ Chair; Axel Voss, DANZ Vice-Chair; Pedro Silva Pereira, Vice President of the European Parliament; members Monika Vana, Iuliu Winkler and Kosma Złotowski; Head of AANZ Unit Niccolò Rinaldi; DANZ Assistant Alyson Wood; and political advisers Vesa Kangaslahti and Katarzyna Ochman-Kaminska. Accompanying from the Delegation of the European Union to Australia was Fabio Spadi, Deputy Head of Mission; Counsellor Cornelis Keijzer; and media adviser Nick Pedley. And from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was David Dutton, Deputy Head of Mission Designate in Brussels.
